Walks in Paris Cemeteries - Lotte Larsen's Paris

A walk through Paris cemeteries is an artistic feast for the eyes, a link with the past, and a fascinating glimpse at how the French decorate their tombs and cemeteries. I am indebted to my husband, Professor Richard E. Meyer, an American cemetery scholar, who has opened my eyes to the wealth of information and cultural richness that can be found in cemeteries.

Consult Bibliography: Cemeteries for books that provide a history and suggested walking routes of most of the cemeteries in Paris. In addition, many of the books cited in the Bibliography: General Guides and Bibliography: Walking Tours provide information about famous graves. Also look at the photos of Cimetière de Pere Lachaise that are part of the Worldwide Cemetery web site.

1. 2.
  • 1. Frederic Chopin's grave in Pere Lachaise, June 1992.
Several books mention the popularity of Chopin's grave as a pilgrimage site for Poles, music lovers, and others. Above the potted plants are candle stubs that were recently burnt, and Polish coins are often seen on the steps.

  • 2. Porcelain flower wreaths on a tomb, Pere Lachaise, June 1992.
Popular throughout France, these wreaths depict a variety of flowers including pansies, chrysanthemums, and roses and provide color and beauty throughout the year.

3. 4.
  • 3. Graffiti on a tomb pointing to Jim Morrison's grave in Pere Lachaise, June 1992.
Throughout the cemetery, many tombs have been vandalized with arrows, quotes and references to Jim and the Doors. Morrison's grave is another pilgrimage site for young people.

  • 4. Tomb decorated with painted medals, Pere Lachaise, June 1992.
Military and honorary medals awarded during a person's life- time are often depicted on French tombs.

5. 6.
  • 5. Tombs with souvenirs, Pere Lachaise, June 1992.
Remembrances from friends, co-workers, relatives, fraternal and veterans groups (called souvenirs) often decorate the top of French tombs. Made of marble or granite, they contain farewell messages and often show a photo or drawing of the deceased.

  • 6. 19th century family mausoleums, Pere Lachaise, June 1992.

7. 8.
  • 7. Buchenwald Memorial, Pere Lachaise, June 1992.
Separate memorials commemorate the concentration camps where French lost their lives during World War II. This one features three skeletal figures; two are trying to save the third one who is dying. The memorials are located along a circular avenue in Division 97.

  • 8. Pet Cemetery, June 1992.
This very-well-tended Cimetière des Chiens, in the suburbs of Paris near the Pont de Clichy (Metro: Gabriel-Peri) is a tribute to the high esteem Parisians place on their dogs and cats. On a typical day you'll see many pet owners watering the flowers on the grave of their pet. Some of the monuments are elaborate and many feature a drawing or photo of the pet.

9. 10.

  • 9. Tomb of Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, Montparnasse Cemetery, June 1992.

  • 10. Montmartre Cemetery, June 1992.

Return to Lotte Larsen's Paris.
