At the request of
de Gaulle,
the 28th US Infantry Division parades down the
Champs Elysées
on 29 August 1944.
Due to the extensive barricading of streets in the city, the parade served the dual purpose
of moving the 28th Division through Paris, and toward combat positions east of the city.
For the first time in US military history, soldiers marched straight from a parade,
into combat within 24 hours.
Seen from the top of the Arc de Triomphe, the 28th US Infantry Division turns
right from
place de l'Etoile
onto the Champs Elysées.
