A collection of thirteen stereo pairs of Paris.
By Norman Barth - La Jolla, California; Paris, France - nbarth@paris.org
Click on the images, or text links, below to see the associated 3D stereo pairs.
Louvre - Sully Wing - 1st arrondissement -
This was taken under ideal weather conditions, but as you can see there
were people walking. If you look closely at the two images, you can
see that they've moved inbetween exposures. This might cause problems
when you try to fuse the two images. If so, then just concentrate on
the upper half of the images, and you shouldn't have any problems.
The Sully Wing of the Louvre is one of the oldest parts of the Louvre -
originally a fortress built by Philippe August in 1200.
The I.M.Pei Pyramid is at my back in this perspective. The afternoon
sun is as well, and
it illuminates the façade bringing out the color of its stone.
From a stereo point of view, this image is rather "flat" - but once
the two images are fused, it is
easy to detect the relief of the columns, windows, and decorative
details of the structure.

Tuileries - 1st arrondissement -
Les Jardin des Tuileries is just to the west of the Musée du Louvre.
Originally a beyond the city walls, in 1564 Catherine de Médicis built the
Palais des Tuileries at the eastern end of the gardens. The Commune of 1871
burned the palace and in 1882 what was left was torn down.
This particular stereo pair has a strong 3D effect due to the statue in the
foreground, and the Denon Wing of the Louvre seen in the background.

Opéra Garnier (Detail) - 9th arrondissement -
This is the upper left corner of the front of the Opera. It was taken on
an overcast day in January 1995. I know very little about architecture, but
I had started to take "detail" images of Paris buildings just in case they
might be interesting to art historians and/or architects.
After taking this "detail" image, I thought that I might as well take a second
stereo image. Once again, because there were no people or cars in the frame
my primative stereo technique would work well. If you look at
the two individual images, you'll notice that the
flags on the left did move, but this doesn't actually cause any
problems. This particular pair is one of my favorites.

Montmartre - 18th arrondissement -
This was one of the other pairs that I took while on the roof of Galeries
Lafayette with Ric Erickson.
Montmartre was off in the distance and I didn't have my long lens. I'm not
sure it would have helped anyway since to it would have been difficult to properly
"register" the second image properly with a long focal length lens (I never carry
a tripod either).
In any event, it was obvious that I should "give it a try" and so I used
the 50 mm lens that was on my camera. As it is, this pair is "okay".
The 3D effect is satisfactory, but probably it would be good to retake
these and try for a bit more detail in the Basilique itself.
