Nina, who was staying for a while on Upper Bedford Place
on Tavistock Square in London, received a postcard in August
1903 from a young girl named Marie-Louise.
My dear Miss B:
How dear of you to remember me! The little package was a
lovely surprise, and the silk stockings in it even lovelier.
I feel very proud of them -- my first pair! Thank you ever
so much. Your fine portraits have given me great pleasure.
I am sorry you are lonely, so come back soon for I am lonely ...
(at this point Marie-Louise turns the card upside down to
continue)
...without you. I leave Thursday morning at 9 a.m. and hope
to see you by then. Mother has been ill since you left. I hope
trip to Switzerland will do her good. How do you like
London? Come back soon. Love from all. Marie-Louise.
The view of the cemetery is down the Allee Principale to a
Memorial to the final and bloody last stand of the Paris Commune
on May 28, 1871. Fierce fighting took place among the
grave stones. At dawn, the 147 survivors were stood against
the wall in the northeast corner and were shot. They were buried
in a communal grave in the cemetery.
