We stayed at the hotel in mid-spring of 1998. The rooms are small but very clean; breakfast is good - baguette, croissant, coffee; and the price is very reasonable. The hotel is one block from a metro station and within walking distance of Notre Dame, Pantheon, etc.
We stayed in this hotel in March 2002. Nice no thrills hotel, small rooms, but clean and with sound proof windows. Close to the tube station (actually Cardinal Lemoine is best), reasonably priced. There is a lift. The main advantage was the FANTASTIC location - Notre Dame and the Gardens round the corner, and we managed to escape the tube for the whole weekend!
We stayed here 2 nights spring 2002. Rooms are small, elevator is tiny, everything very clean. Showers were hot, rooms quiet. Location is great, staff is friendly. Didn't try breakfast, no restaurant, they bring it to your room. Lots of cafes nearby.
The Royal Cardinal is an excellent small scale hotel, ideal for couples and singles travelling on a budget. It has two metro stations within a block or two and a significant advantage is that Rue Mouffetard is a five minute walk from the hotel: there you will find all sorts of cuisine traditions at reasonable prices. Don't neglect the neighbourhood epicerie a couple of doors away, the Vietnamese restaurant across the street from the main door nor the public swimming pool in Rue Pontoise. As a final boon, the Seine is a couple of blocks down the street and Notre Dame can be reached on foot within ten minutes. The staff are pleasant and the breakfast provides an appropriate to a day of sightseeing. We have stayed on three or four separate occasions and always find a room here, usually without needing to book in advance. Highly to be recommended!
I first stated at the Cardinal in 1986, I've stayed there a total of 10 times over the years. I've always enjoyed it, it's clean, it' used to have a great little cafe/bar next door that was jumping at night. My favorite reason is the location, your not far from the Seine. The management is freindly and helpful. Of course the price has gone up over the years, but it's still a nice little place to stay. Try and get a room looking out the front you can see Socre Cour? in the distance. Paris is all about romance and always will. It brings back a truck load of memories.
