• We stayed at Le Central for three nights. It has a great location for exploring the Latin Quarter. Pilar is amiable but a knowledge of French is a must to stay here. The stairway is narrow and formidable. It is a very ancient hotel bare bones but clean. You can't beat the price.

• We stayed here for 3 night Jan 2002. The location is lovely. Loads of hot water but the toilet is very small. At about £24 per night for a double room I think it was excellent value and I'd stay there again.

• The kind woman that runs this hotel was very patient with my poor Frech skills. I stayed here in December 2000 and this will be the first hotel I check out when I return to Paris next week. Basic and very cheap, a bit noisy because there is a spot to park many scooters and motorcycles out front, but not a problem (even on the third fllor). Right at the end of le Mouffetard. Great find.
