rue Madrid, rue Portalis; perspective rue du Rocher - VIII Arrondissement
Paris Kiosque - April 2003 - Volume 10, Number 4 Copyright (c) 2003 Norman Barth - Used with permission.
8th Arrondissement:
From the vantage point of rue du Rocher, you can look out onto
rue Portalis (left) and rue Madrid (on the right).
Part of the church of St. Augustine can just be seen at the end of
rue Portalis.
In the area of this image several windmills used to be found.
In particular at this intersection of rue du Rocher, and rue Madrid, was
the moulin de la Marmite - one of about five within a few hundred metres.
Rue Portalis was opened in 1859. In 1867 took on its present name
after Jean Etienne Portalis, politician and jurist who lived from 1746 - 1807.
Previously belonging to the rue de Lisbonne (1826), the section now known
as rue Madrid opened in 1867.
Rue du Rocher is part of an old road from Paris to Argenteuil.
It dates from 16th century.
