The Prince of Montparnasse -
Richard Erickson -
Julius Mordecai Pincas was born in Vidin, Bulgaria in
1885 and he died as Pascin in his Montmartre atelier
in Paris in 1930.
Between the two dates, Pascin
also managed with ease to become the symbol of Montparnasse;
its living incarnation. Why nobody remembers him as Montparnasse's unofficial
'Prince' of the '20's is a mystery.
Letter From Paris -
Harriet Welty-Rochefort -
There are all kinds of things going on in France these days but the
two subjects which are on everyone's lips are the U.S. presidential election
and la vache folle (mad cow disease).
Middle Ages Crisis: The Medieval Garden -
Paul Jensi -
The small park stuck like a postage stamp between the Cluny Museum of the
Middle Ages and the Roman Thermal Baths stayed closed for months. The Square
de Cluny hid behind billboards detailing the park's conversion into a garden
resembling that of the time when knights slew dragons and swept damsels in
distress off their feet. Those of us who love Paris like a lady waited
impatiently for the day when the gardens would be unveiled. Well, the idea
looked good on parchment.
Antoine Bourdelle -
Thirza Vallois -
The one-time home of sculptor Antoine Bourdelle narrowly escaped
demolition when it was turned into a museum,
Musée Bourdelle. In 1929 the sculptor's widow,
generously backed by the art patron Ernest Cognacq, succeeded in
buying up the premises so as to preserve her husband's heritage
and offer it to France; but the state simply rejected her donation!
So did the City of Paris, which, however, revised its opinion 20 years
later.
