January 1997 - Volume 4, Number 1, Copyright (c) 1997
This month - while all the world, and Paris - recuperates from a hectic end of year rush,
the Paris Kiosque and its writers, also take a break. This issue,
we gather together our past Images of the Month, and present you with
a gallery of scenes from Paris. We're looking forward to
bringing you more reporting and accounts of the City in 1997, and
hope you'll be here to share them with us. Until then take a look
at the City as we recorded it over the past year.

Rue Soufflot - Panthéon;
January 1997 - Fontaine Edmond-Rostand in the foreground, rue Soufflot, and
the Panthéon in the background are the main elements of a
classic Paris perspective. Seen here on a stunning day, the scene
inspires us with the urban beauty of which Paris is capable.

Ecole Militaire;
December 1996 -
Framed by the iron of the Eiffel Tower, the Champs de Mars ends with the Ecole Militaire, and
behind it, the Tour Montparnasse.

Mime; Jardin des Tuileries;
November 1996 - Jardin des Tuileries - Statues
abound in this garden between the Place de la Concorde,
and the Louvre. Most have been there for a century or
two, but some pose for just an afternoon. Rue de Rivoli
and the Ferris Wheel of the Foire de Trône in the
background; disbelieving child and mime in the
foreground.

Les Halles;
October 1996 - Here, in the center of
the City are reflections of old and new.

Cour Napoléon / Musée du Louvre;
August 1996 - At Dusk, the Cour Napoléon is a quiet place. I.M. Pei's
Pyramid is to the left, and obscuring the Pavillon de
Flore of the Musée du Louvre; the Arc de Triomphe du
Carroussel is in the center.

Sacré Coeur, Montmartre;
July 1996 - From this perspective, this great big wedding cake sits
atop the most prominent hill of Paris, while tourists,
and vagabonds from around the world mix around its
edges.

I.M.Pei Pyramid / Musée du Louvre;
June 1996 - A calm falls upon the Cour Napoléon in the
early evening, after a day of bustling tourists from
around the world. The Arc de Triomphe du Carrosel is
in the background on the left; the Richelieu Wing of the
Louvre on the right.

Centre Pompidou - Beaubourg;
May 1996 - When it first opened, the Centre Pompidou caused an
outcry because of all the exposed "plumbing". The
"front" of the building was bad enough, but the rear
façade was even more provocative. Nevertheless,
precisely this perspective is Geert van Buul's favorite.

Jardin des Tuileries;
April 1996 - Looking
west toward the Musée du Louvre. The gardens were
created in the 16th century at the pleasure of Catherine
de Médicis to accompany the Palais des Tuileries. The
Palais was burned during the Commune in 1871, but
the gardens survived and on a splendid summer day
you can even go sailing. Copyright (c) 1996
