Letter From Paris -
Harriet Welty-Rochefort -
In my last Letter From Paris, I talked about the raving success of "Amélie",
the French film that has so delighted audiences on both sides of the
Atlantic and is a leading candidate for best foreign film at the Oscars
March 24. It's obvious to anyone who's seen the movie, which just triumphed
as best picture at the Cesars, the French equivalent of the Oscars, that no
one but a French woman could have so luminously played the role of the
puckish, whimsical, touching, tender, clever, and absolutely charming Amélie
An Oasis In The 7th -
Richard Erickson -
Many visitors
seem to choose to stay in hotels in the 7th
arrondissement, in the area around the Ecole Militaire. If I
ask why, they say their guide books recommend the neighborhood
around the Rue Cler.
Chantilly and Senlis: A Castle and A Town Fit for Kings -
Rachel Kaplan -
While the Louvre and Versailles tend to be household names, many visitors to Paris are
surprised to learn that 20 minutes away from Charles De Gaulle Airport are two of the
most enchanting sites in France: the magnificent castle and stables of Chantilly and the
ancient town of Senlis, whose Gallo-Roman wall, cobbled streets, handsome stone houses
and early Gothic cathedral, have won over many directors of costume dramas for film and
television.
Echoes Along The Seine (Part III/IV) -
Robert Forrest Burgess -
Papa never met a stranger. He said he knew several Frenchmen who
fished certain productive parts of the river between the Ile St. Louis (The island just
east of L'Ile de la Cité containing Notre Dame Cathedral) and the Place du Vert
Galant. He said that travel writers often thought that the fishermen along the Seine were
completely crazy because they never seemed to be catching anything. The impression was
that they were just fishing for the fun of it. Which to some observers suggested that they
were engaged in an activity that was about as worthwhile as meditating on your navel.
