Paris Kiosque - May 2003 - Volume 10, Number 5 Copyright (c) 2003 Norman Barth - Used with permission.
The Fontaine Saint Sulpice is also known as the Fontaine des Orateurs Sacrés
and Fontaine des Quartre-Evêques. It was built here from 1844 to 1847, the plans
drawn up by the architect Louis-Tullius-JoachimVisconti (1791 - 1853).
Its resemblance to the Fontaine des Innocents in Les Halles is not an accident.
The four sided structure, on top of the eight sided basin, is dedicated to four grand
catholic orators and bishops: Bossuet (bishop of Meaux), Fénelon (archbishop of Cambrai),
Massillon (bishop of Clermont), and Fléchier (bishop of Nîmes).
