Letter From Paris -
Harriet Welty-Rochefort -
May is a wonderful month in France, a month of holidays in which the French
take as many "ponts" or "bridges" as they can to have the longest week ends
available. This year they're out of luck: only one of the May holidays
(there are four) is on a Monday or a Thursday this year. Too bad. Some
years the May holidays fall so conveniently that you wonder why anybody
bothers to go to work at all!
A Walk in The Eighth Arrondissement -
Thirza Vallois -
The month of May is a delicious time for outdoor strolls. Flowers are
in bloom and spring is in the air. Just inhaling the exquisite smells
of the gardens of Paris iw worth a detour, if nothing else.
The 8th arrondissement is blessed with two exquisite gardens - those of
the lower Champs-Elysées and the very upper-class Parc Monceau.
(This piece is excerpted from Thirza Vallois' book Around and About Paris.)
Not Finding Paris' Oldest Tree
- Richard Erickson -
I was led to believe the propped-up tree in the
park beside the church was Paris' oldest, but this does
not seem to be the case. If I'd done the
reading before the looking, I would have read that the
oldest tree is in the Jardin des Plantes, because I've
been there looking for the second oldest tree. So what
I saw, was the third oldest tree.
