Letter From Paris - Harriet Welty-Rochefort - Halloween has hit France in a big way this year. Bookstores and pastry stores are filled with Halloween gadgets and, as only the French can, are enticingly beautiful even in their spookiness!

Where Everything is Bercy - Richard Erickson - When I took a ride on the new métro line 14 last week I noticed the name of a new métro station: 'Cour Saint-Emilion.' This is between Bercy and the Bibliothèque, so I guess it is where the old wine depot used to be.

Le Père Lachaise - Thirza Vallois - Only a few years ago, no self-respecting French person would have celebrated anything mildly connected with America. (The Catholic holiday of La Toussaint (All Saints Day) was de rigueur on October 31st, followed the next day by Le Jour des Morts. But for the last two years the shopwindows of Paris have been decked with pumpkins and America is marching on France after all! For the sake of old days and old traditions, however, the cemeteries of Paris is where you should head on November 1st, and here is the story of the largest and most famous of Paris's cemeteries, Le Père Lachaise. (This piece is excerpted from Thirza Vallois' book Around and About Paris.)

French History - November - Events: UNESCO Headquarters established in Paris (1946); Musée du Louvre opens its doors (1793); Births: Marie Antoinnette (1755), Albert Camus (1913), Rodin (1840), Voltaire (1694), Charles de Gaulle (1890), Jacques Chirac (1932).
