The 10th Arrondissement's Montfaucon - Thirza Vallois - The 10th arrondissement provides us with a gruesome story that may chill your bones and spine, but which befits the dreary month of November and such celebrations as Halloween and La Toussaint. For reasons of geography, too, the main gallows of the city that came under royal jurisdiction was set up in this area. (This piece is excerpted from Thirza Vallois' book Around and About Paris.)

Letter From Paris - Harriet Welty-Rochefort - First of all, here's the Paris weather report on the day I am writing this column - perfect. The thing about Paris in the fall is that you can have a stretch of grey polluted fog and haze and then comes the one exquisite day when the sun comes out, the leaves turn yellow, and there's a kind of magic quality to the air that makes you forget about what came before - or what may come after.

photo: The Boulodrome in the Luxembourg Gardens A Little Pétanque? - Richard Erickson - Unlike checkers, which is a game, pétanque or boules is a sport. Not all the players are of retirement age, but all of them are very focused on what they are doing. They are tossing metal cannon balls at a little wooden ball, inside a dirt-surfaced area surrounded by a 30-centimetre high board fence, which is inside of a low, wire loop-loop park-fence.

The Paris Kiosque 1 Year Ago:
Le Père Lachaise - - Thirza Vallois Only a few years ago, no self-respecting French person would have celebrated anything mildly connected with America. (The Catholic holiday of La Toussaint (All Saints Day) was de rigueur on October 31st, followed the next day by Le Jour des Morts. But for the last two years the shopwindows of Paris have been decked with pumpkins and America is marching on France after all! For the sake of old days and old traditions, however, the cemeteries of Paris is where you should head on November 1st, and here is the story of the largest and most famous of Paris's cemeteries, Le Père Lachaise.

French History - November - Events: UNESCO Headquarters established in Paris (1946); Musée du Louvre opens its doors (1793) Births: Marie Antoinnette (1755), Albert Camus (1913), Rodin (1840), Voltaire (1694), Charles de Gaulle (1890), Jacques Chirac (1932).
