Version Française
In 1575, François de Belleforest published a new edition of the
Cosmographie universelle of Münster (Germany).
One section of city maps which in this work was reprinted, and this
was the case for this map engraved in wood with finesse by Cruche.
It consists of a single large folio, 55 by 41 cm.
In the upper left is the seal of France, above a closed crown.
To the right, the emblem of Paris, between two suits of armor,
a floating banner on which we read in small capital letters:
LA VILLE, CITE, VNIVERSITE ET FAVX-BOVRGS DE PARIS.
The interior of the map has no inscriptions. Instead the principal streets
and important edifices are numbered or indicated with letters, which correspond
with keys or legends framed in four boxes in each corner of the map.
There are 84 numbers, and two alphabets d through e.
The map of Paris by Belleforest is fairly rare, as the is the book which contains it.
