Paris, Monday, 8. January 1996:- Two-term President of the French Republic, Francois Mitterrand, died this morning at 8:30 local time, according to his private secretary. He was 79 years old.
Capping a long political career with ascendancy to the French presidency in 1981, M. Mitterrand led France for 14 years, until handing over to his successor, Jacques Chirac, on 7. May 1995.
After leaving office M. Mitterrand retired from public life, and moved from his 25-year residence in the
rue de Bièvre, located in his favorite area of Paris, the Quartier Latin, to an apartment in the 7th arrondissement, in the avenue Frédéric-Le Play, near the Champ de Mars. He died there this morning, shortly after returning from a Christmas holiday in Egypt.
Francois Mitterrand joined the resistance in 1944 and was in General Charles de Gaulle's first government following WWII. He was a life-long socialist - founding the present Socialist Party in 1971. He was candidate for president four times and finally gained the post in 1981, winning the second round ballot over M Valery Giscard d'Estaing - who he had lost out to in the elections of 1974. He defeated M. Jacques Chirac in the presidential elections of 1988, but did not run in last spring's presidential election due to ill health, and M. Chirac managed to gain a majority.
The funeral will be held at the place of his birth, in a private ceremony; probably on Thursday.
