7 Million Franc Purse at 74th Edition of Racing Classic at Longchamp

Paris - Saturday; 30 September 1995:
Special Eurostar trains will be racing under
the blue waters of 'Le Manche, through the 'red-ink' plagued Eurotunnel
this weekend, carrying top-hatted hordes of pin-stripped punters to
Europe's last big international racing event of the season, and to their
rendez-vous with literal fountains of champagne.
No, this is not the twenties. It is the ninety-fives; but it will be
the first time since the race was first run in 1920 that nobody has
arrive already seasick. On Sunday, when you will be able to see the
finest examples of British breeding tottering around on medium-to-high
heels, you will realize how advantageous Eurotunnel can be to bubbly
consumption.
But, perhaps you will be more interested in some nice-looking horses
instead? According to Thursday's edition of the Paris racing daily,
'Paris Turf,' there were 18 three year old colts and fillies signed up
to hurl themselves out of the starting gates onto the green turf for a
2400 metre dash to fairly large-sized silver pot with a seven million
(about US$1.414 million) franc cheque in it for the owner of the first
nose whisker-hair to break the magic-light barrier at the finishing line in
front of the 15,000 seat
tribune and under the gaze of the President of the Republique, as well
as perhaps as many as 110,000 pairs of eyes gathered at the interior
rail of the track, and including the zillions of people watching the
event on TV, where it will be televised worldwide in more than 60
countries - including at Honk Kong's Sha Tin racecourse where it will
be shown 'live' about 22:15 local time. Not only will Hong Kong's
punters be able to go to the racetrack to watch a race on TV, they
will be able to place bets on the outcome by telephone, and part of
these Hong Kong dollars will go to.... Paris. Now, if they have home
delivery of fountains of champagne....imagine how nice it will be!
If you are closer than Hong Kong, why not stop by Longchamp on Sunday?
If you bring money, be sure it is 'spare' money. Money, 'spare' or not,
is not, however, absolutely essential. Enough for a couple of cafes and
a sandwich in your pocket will do - as it did in 1920.
