The most recent fastest race time, recorded in 1987, was clocked by Trempolino, ridden by P. Eddery; at 2'26"30 for the 2400 metres. The winning odds were 20 to 1. Jockey Eddery rode the winners of the 1986, 1985, and 1980 events. T. Jarnet won on Carnegie in 1994, E. Saint-Martin won on Urban Sea in 1993, T. Jarnet won again on Subotica in 1992, C. Asmussen won on Suave Dancer in 1991, G. Mosse won on Saumarez in 1990, M.-J. Kinane won on Carroll House in 1989, and J. Reid won on Tony Bin in 1988.

The heavy favorite to win, gathered from Saturday news reports, is no. 12, Lammtarra. This horse has been picked winner by 16 out of 24 news organisations. Alternative number one, horse no. 9, Balanchine, was picked as first by 5. For second place, 9 chose no. 1, Carnegie, last year's winner; and 5 chose Balanchine.

Of the four papers that have previously predicted the greatest number of winners, three have choosen no. 12. Lammtarra first and no. 1. Carnegie, second. The fourth has choosen the combination of no. 9. Balanchine for first and no. 12. Lammtarra second.

Weather forecast for Sunday's race : cloudy but sunny periods, temperature up to 20 C.; wind: southwest from 10 to 20 kph. The grass course is expected to be quite supple.
