The Paris Pages Experience
Index
Whether the data is able to be classified as fully as desired, or as necessary, at some point a set, or sets, will be settled upon, and it is time to form associations between these data types.
Associating Data Types
Although at times the differences are subtle, this activity is different from that of creating hyperlinks between the data. Associating the different data types is to determine how the web site is to be built. It is a web site planning activity, and percolates down even to the physical structure of the site on the computer's hard disk: All museums will be put in the museums directory, and so forth.
The Data Association Problem
Unfortunately, for even modest amounts of data, the number of ways of associating them quickly becomes infinite. If the web site consists of html files, then these associations are static and fixed. This will almost always be an unsatisfying result for content rich data. It will also limit the Internaut's ability to move quickly to the desired information. They may be forced to take a tortuous path toward their destination, one which is not intuitive for any number of reasons. In some cases there will also be multiple associations which seem appropriate, yet because hyperlinks are single valued, it is unclear how to physically make these associations. Special wording, and custom made sentences can sometimes solve the problem, but this is possible only for a few pages here and there, and certainly impossible in the general case.
